This video training device allows for simulated laparoscopic manipulation under realistic conditions. It is easily transportable, with the general working dimensions of a distended abdomen. It is covered by a removable frame containing a resilient multi-layered membranous structure simulating the anterior abdominal wall. It has a flexible floor mat that can be selectively adjusted to various heights at three axial positions forming various floor configurations. The floor mat is formed with velcro strips for attachment to corresponding strips mounted on exercise platforms. The laparoscopic skill exercises are conducted on models that are either integral with or replaceably attached to the platforms.

A stop watch for measuring exercise time, external posts for practicing knot tying are provided. The camera lens assembly may be furnished by a camcorder mounted on a tripod to supply a stable and magnified view of any portion of the box's interior. The camera is also connected to a standard video recorder and monitor to permit review and analysis of the exercise manipulations. This arrangement makes the system affordable, transportable and easy to operate since it is not dependent on assembling equipment generally found in the operating room. The simulator may be also used with a standard laparoscope attached to a video camera, light source and monitor. The laparoscope is introduced through a primary cannula inserted through the simulated abdominal wall. Practice with the laparoscope requires an assistant to manipulate the scope; no assistant is needed when the camcorder is utilized.
