Study 1: Training Simulator for Developing Laparoscopic Skills

Study 2: Experience With the Laparoscopy Training Simulator 2000 (LTS2000)

Hasson, HM  PI

JSLS. (2001) 5:255-65

Scholmeyer, T  PI

JAAGL. (2001) 8:524

Two prospective studies were conducted to measure degree of improvement of laparoscopic skills with the LTS2000 using objective pre- and post-training assessments.

Training with the LTS2000 significantly improves laparoscopic skills; Eekhout scoring system did not allow for relative maximum scores.
Study 3: Physical Reality Simulation for Training of Laparoscopists in the 21st Century: A Multi-Specialty and Multi-Institutional Study

Fichera, A  PI

JSLS. (2005)9:125-29

Prospective study carried out to establish the reliability of the simulator in differentiating levels of laparoscopic experience and detecting skill improvement after clinical training.

The LTS2000 reliably and reproducibly detects different levels of laparoscopic expertise and accelerates progression of the learning curve. The LTS2000 should be considered as a reliable alternative to virtual reality simulation.

Study 4:Participants' Opinions of Laparoscopic Training Devices after a Basic Laparoscopic Training Course

Madan, AK  PI

AmJSurg. (2005)189:758-61

Various devices are utilized to aid in the education of laparoscopic skills ranging from physical trainers (e.g. LTS2000) to virtual reality trainers (e.g. MIST-VR). This investigation tested the hypothesis that participants would prefer either the LTS2000 or the MIST-VR.

While virtual reality trainers make have some advantages, most participants feel that the LTS2000 helps more (in preparing for porcine surgery), is more interesting, and should be chosen over virtual reality trainers if only one trainer is allowed.
